A single scalp hair grows continuously for 2-4 years (growth phase) and then stopsgrowing for 2-4 months (rest phase). After this the hair falls out. In its place a newhealthy hair begins to grow, and the cycle is repeated. The hairs on your scalp arealways in different stages of this cycle so it is normal to lose scalp hair every day.

What is male pattern hair loss?

Male pattern hair loss is a common condition in which men experience thinning of thehair on the scalp, often resulting in a receding hairline and/or balding on the top of thehead. This condition is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic factors and aparticular hormone, DHT (dihydrotestosterone).

DHT causes a decrease in the growth phase and thinning of the hair (see picture). Thisleads to male pattern hair loss. These changes can start to occur in some men in their20s and become more common with age. Once hair loss has occurred over a longperiod of time, the hair may be permanently lost.

Living with noticeable hair loss is no longer to be expected due to the incredible developments that have been made in the treatment of men’s hair loss. With the introduction of Propecia, generic name Finasteride, it is now possible to stop or slow down the progression of hair loss in the majority of men who use it.

Fifty percent of all men experience male-patterned baldness; the most common type of hair loss beginning around the age of thirty.

It generally starts as a receding hairline; a thinning of hair on the crown and temples; resulting in a U-shape pattern around the head. In some rare cases, a male may end up completely bald.

The condition is genetic; caused by an abundance of the male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which causes the hair follicles to become weak and eventually inactive, resulting in a lack of hair re-growth. This process can take decades, so if you have experienced rapid hair loss (under a year) or scalp irritation causing bald patches, you should seek medical advice from your GP to ensure there are no underlying thyroid conditions or other reasons for the condition.

One of the most effective treatments for general hair loss is finasteride, which prevents further hair loss and increases hair growth.

Propecia® (finasteride) is a medication prescribed for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). It works by blocking the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which is responsible for converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a hormone that plays a significant role in hair loss and is known to cause hair follicles to shrink over time. In some cases, DHT causes hair follicles to become miniaturized, leading to thinner hair strands and eventual baldness. Propecia® (finasteride) is a medication approved by the FDA for the treatment of male pattern hair loss. It contains the active ingredient finasteride, which works by reducing levels of DHT. Propecia® (finasteride) is available in various forms, including tablets, oral tablets, and topical solution. The tablet form is generally prescribed for men who have mild to moderate hair loss. The oral tablet form is generally prescribed for men who have moderate to severe hair loss, and is usually prescribed for a longer duration of treatment. Finasteride is also available as a topical solution and foam for oral use. It is important to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any hair loss treatment, particularly if you have pre-existing medical conditions or are taking other medications. Evaluation

Objective:To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a new oral dose of finasteride (Proscar®) for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (androgenic alopecia) in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, double-dummy phase II trial. Method: A retrospective, phase II trial was conducted in 10 patients (mean age: 54.6 years) with a diagnosis of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or a recurrence of male pattern hair loss. Patients were evaluated with the Proscar and finasteride regimens. Results: Proscar was significantly more effective than finasteride at achieving a greater percentage of reduction in BPH and/or male pattern hair loss on the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) at Week 12 (50.0% vs. 48.7% of placebo) in patients who had at least a two-year recurrence. The median duration of effect was 24 months compared with 17 months in those who had at least a one-year recurrence. The mean time to the first positive prostate-specific antigen (PSA) prostate biopsy was 18 months. The mean time to prostate biopsy was 26 months compared with 7 months in those who had no treatment. Results: Patients who had a PSA prostate biopsy at least one year prior to randomization were significantly more likely to have a recurrence of male pattern hair loss and BPH than those who had no treatment, with the difference being statistically significant (p<0.001). Results: The mean number of PSA biopsies was 2.5 in those who had no treatment and 0.5 in those who had a 1-year recurrence. Patients who had a PSA prostate biopsy at least 12 months prior to randomization were significantly more likely to have a recurrence of male pattern hair loss and BPH than those who had no treatment, with the difference being statistically significant (p<0.001). Results: A higher number of patients who had at least one recurrence of male pattern hair loss and BPH was observed in the Proscar group. This finding indicates that finasteride is more effective than finasteride alone in the treatment of male pattern hair loss. Conclusion: The study of Proscar demonstrated that finasteride is more effective than finasteride alone in the treatment of male pattern hair loss. Patients who had a recurrence of male pattern hair loss were significantly more likely to have a recurrence of BPH and male pattern hair loss compared with those who had no treatment. These results suggest that Proscar is more effective than finasteride in the treatment of male pattern hair loss.
